Homework
Homework will go home in a folder on Monday and is due back on Friday. In the homework folder will be a reading log that needs to be completed daily (Monday-Thursday). It is expected that students will read for 20 minutes each night. The students are expected to fill out the reading log themselves, and then it is to be signed by an adult. Also, the homework folder may contain math homework that will relate to what we are doing in class, so waiting until Wednesday or Thursday to complete this homework would be wise. There may also be an additional page of homework tied into reading, writing, spelling or other academics we are working on in class. All homework must be completed and turned in on Friday. We will not accept folders back early unless a Friday absence is expected. Please space the homework out over the course of the week keeping in mind your busy schedules and commitments.
Homework Guidelines for Parents
Friday Folders
Friday Folders go home on Friday and are due back on Monday. In this folder will be graded work, important notes, and school communications. Please make sure you look through the papers, sign in the appropriate box, and return the empty folder on Monday morning.
The Nothing Notebook
The Nothing Notebook will go home on Friday and is due back on Monday. This is the parent’s homework. Parents are to respond to your student’s entry for the week with a note of encouragement and then send the notebook back on Monday. Please keep in mind this is about the communication between you and your child and not about correcting spelling and mechanics.
Birthdays
Due to the number of food allergies and restrictions, we ask that students do not bring in treats to celebrate birthdays. We will recognize students on their birthdays in other ways throughout their special day. June and July birthdays will be celebrated at the end of the school year.
Behavior Management
We have a behavior rubric in class. Everyone starts the day on good. For exceptional behavior your child’s star will be moved to outstanding, which is rewarded at the end of the day. If your child’s behavior is not in line with the class expectations, their star is moved to warning so they can see they need to modify their behavior. If the behavior is modified, their star will be moved back up to good. If the behavior is not modified to meet class expectations, their star moves to consequence and your child will owe recess time and/or respond to a written improvement plan that will be sent home to be signed by a parent. Remember no news is good news and ending the day on outstanding or good is wonderful and should be praised.
A variety of positive reinforcements will be used to remind students that respect and hard work doesn’t go unnoticed. Positive reinforcements might include stickers, small treats, encouraging words, high five, phone call home, email, note home, etc.
Communication/Quest Website
I welcome your questions and concerns. The best way to contact me is by email. I check my email regularly and respond when class is no longer in session (usually after school). If you must relay an urgent message to me or your child before the end of the school day please contact the main office by telephone. You may also speak to me directly by phone before or after school (from 7:15-7:45 am and from 2:30-3:15 pm). I am also available to meet with you in person. Please schedule a time to conference with me, so that I may dedicate an uninterrupted block of time to you and your child. It is often difficult to have an impromptu meeting before or after school due to supervision responsibilities, staff meetings, or other planned commitments.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns. My email address is [email protected]

Homework Guidelines for Parents
- Homework is not meant to cause stress or conflict to you or your child. If at any time it does, stop and send me a note to inform me of the situation so I can offer support.
- It should not fall on you to teach your child a new skill we are learning in class. If you feel your child lacks understanding, please let me know so I may work with them.
